End of Year Literary Circles

My Project

I am a doctorate student in English Pedagogy and have been designing my own curriculum that is meant to aid students in navigating the complex emotions and daily conflicts they experience through the eyes of fictional characters.

This project started after I lost my own daughter at the young age of 15 to suicide.

I wondered what went wrong, what could have been done to help her. It was by asking these questions that I came to design a special form of literary circles that allows students to explore their emotions by examining characterization and conflicts in novels.

All of the literary circles are tasked to work as a team for four to five weeks. Each team of four to five students must complete their own task to present to the group. At the end of the week, students lead a discussion on the book using their assigned task.

At the end of the weekly activity, students complete a quiz that outlines what character or conflict they most relate to and why. They then must reason out what they would have done differently to solve the problem and why.

I have been running this project with my middle school students this year with incredible results. Students have seen great social/emotional changes in the last several months as they have displayed more genuine helping and caring for one another.

This past term, students were able to take benchmark testing that showed these literary circles went beyond their social/emotional growth and reached into their academic growth as they had higher scores with nearly everyone making strong gains toward their learning goals.

As we reach the end of the year, we have just one more unit to go before state testing, and we are hoping to finish strong.
