Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Some of my students have not learned the possibilities that await them every time they open a new book. I want them to learn that a new adventure is waiting in each new book they read. The supplies will help enrich our Reading and Writing Workshop.

Many of my students are transitioning to English instruction this year after at least three years of bilingual instruction.

The majority of the class qualifies for free or reduced price lunch. The students are eager to learn but have not yet developed their thirst for reading. I want to expose them to the joy of reading by using a Reading and Writing Workshop. I hope to expand and organize our class library. I also want to provide my students an opportunity to not only read great books but to respond to literature by typing literature responses on the computer. I am hoping that by having the students share their literature responses with the class, other students will want to read books that they had not previously considered. I also want to improve their language skills by having students share their typed written responses.

My Project

I have requested a printer and chart stand to help provide visual aids to support my English language learners. The workstations will be used so the students can work independently on their reading and writing skills (in a fun way). I have also requested some books for our read aloud time. The students will use all supplies to support their reading. Finally, I have added some supplies to organize our library and display our reading responses.

The supplies will help promote reading and writing.

I hope to build the students' desire to read by providing different activities and opportunities for reading. The majority of the students in the class do not have a variety of books at home nor do they attend the public library regularly. Some of the materials will be added to our classroom library. The workstations will allow the students to have fun with reading.
