My students need 11 high-interest books from "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" to "The Big Field" to encourage reluctant readers to explore the world of reading!
I'm so glad that my classroom library is a WRECK! The books are falling apart at the bindings, books are missing from series, and the edges are worn from hundreds of turns.... because that means my students are READING!! We are in desperate need of updates - newer titles and books.
Over 75% of students in our school live below the poverty level.
Our school is full of caring and talented teachers. Many of our students come to school to meet their basic needs, so reading is often the last thing on their minds. The titles I would like to add to our classroom library are based on topics that are very interesting to middle school students -- sports, romance, science fiction. I have seen kids devour these books in the past, so I know that they will be well-read! There was a time when our school had money to buy books for classrooms, but in the past few years have had none. I have done everything I can to make the books last, but some are beyond use.
My Project
I was not a "reader" in my early school career. In sixth grade, I discovered Nancy Drew. Soon, I couldn't get enough of the series. I read in the car, at the table, between classes - any time I could find! I realized that a book could take me away to another time and place.
One of these books could inspire a student to escape into the world of reading. When life gets tough, a book can help heal. Students will learn that books are more than something required for class, but a lifetime of enjoyment and fulfillment.
The families in our community do not have the financial means to buy books for their children.
I strive to inspire a love of reading in all of my students. These new books would be a blessing.
