Benjamin Franklin once said, "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." Students need to be involved in their learning so that they can take ownership of what they are doing. Students need to get their hands "dirty" by using them to research, create, and make learning meaningful. I teach about 18 eager, energetic third-grade students in my classroom this year. We are a Title I school which means 100% of our students participate in the free lunch program. All of our students are eager to learn and need experiences that they do not get at home. Many of our children come from single-parent homes.
Our school is in close proximity to a major military base; we serve many students who come from active and retired military families.
I also help run the Entrepreneurial Club at our school. Students are tasked with planning, designing, and creating items to sell at school functions. Our students have made many items such as t-shirts, personalized bears, stickers, and decals. Our club uses the "profits" to help with school beautification projects. They are so proud to take ownership of their club growth!
My Project
I am working on expanding our classroom library and asked the students what kind of books they were interested in. The boys and girls yelled for Dad Pilkey graphic novels!
Getting kids engaged in reading can be a challenge, so when the kids beg for a certain type of book you provide!
I have a class of diverse readers. I have several reluctant readers except for when it comes to Captain Underpants and Dog Man! My students go crazy for these books! When they begged for more of these books how could I resist?
Students will also be able to take books home to read to their family members to encourage more parental involvement and spread the love of Dav Pilkey.
