This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I'd like to help my multilingual English learners see that reading is entertaining and can actually be therapeutic. Such works that I think would inspire my English Learner students to read include Jeff Kinney's entertaining Diary of a Wimpy Kid books and Sonic the Hedgehog comics that follow easy-to-pick up yet engaging stories with panels that allow for them to understand what's going on with each piece of dialogue. It is my hope to have these books available for them in the classroom so that they can have a quick read using the free time they have after completing assignments instead of scrolling endlessly on their cellphones. In allowing these options to be present in the classroom, it is my hope that this inspires them to read more in English and to pursue more advanced books, which are offered in the school library.

I would like to present them the opportunity to unwind and dive into good books while giving them an imaginative way to escape their stressful realities with works that originally got me into reading when I was younger and at their level of English.

These kids have been forced to mature due to many struggles they have faced in life and have missed out on fun ways to read growing up. Many have made a mature decision to sacrifice their old lives and come to the United States in hopes of learning more English and obtaining better opportunities. Some stress constantly about whether they are living in a permanent home, which causes much anxiety and affects their mental health.
