I teach students with autism in kindergarten through 6th grade. Every single one of them presents with different challenges, love languages, and energy levels. My students are the light of my life! The goal of our classroom is to teach them to communicate and be as independent as possible. Most of the students suffer from sensory processing issues and we try to incorporate sensory play throughout the day to encourage communication and social skills in the classroom.
It is very important to me as an educator to provide all of my students with every opportunity and access to every thing they need to progress and that will help them in their lives.
My Project
Autistic children are generally very hyper focused on one thing or one way to do things. They have a hard time expanding outside their way of looking at things and that way is often very narrow. Imagination and imaginative play is something we often have to teach them. By providing this range of art supplies, I can provide them with more creative opportunities to expand how they look at things and open their minds to a new way of doing things.
This range of art supplies will provide the visual stimuli autistic children need to help them create and use their imaginations!
The fine motor toys will help them with with their fine motor skills, which many of them need help with, that will help them with their crafting. We already provide structured fine motor time in our classroom; with these supplies, we can expand that and now offer more structured arts and crafts time!
