Encouraging Historical Thinking Through Storytelling

My students need audio/visual equipment (headphones, DVDs, and cables) to create and present documentary and podcast projects.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my students are interested in the creative arts and no so interested in history. I am hoping that by combining their love of technology, movies, and music to bring out the storytellers in them.

My students are creative and smart, but most come from underprivileged backgrounds and don't have much exposure to using technology outside of texting on a cell phone.

My students struggle trying to examine history from different perspectives and I hope that by having them "create" history by being the historians themselves, they will have a greater appreciation for the subject and improve their communication skills.

My Project

I have two projects envisioned with these materials. The headsets will be used in both projects. In the first, students will create podcasts showcasing the life or aspect of the Harlem Renaissance. They then will create posters with QR codes that we would post in the classroom (and around the school) so that students would share their knowledge. The second project would be the creation of historical documentaries on a variety of topics. Students conducted research and created an annotated bibliography. They would have to write scripts, piece together the visuals and music, and record the narration. We have some computers, but our school does not have any microphone headsets. The DVD discs and sleeves are for them to record their projects (documentaries), the adapter is for those who choose to display from their phone to be able to connect to the projector, DVD player so they can display, and the HDMI cable is so we can connect it to the projector.

This project will benefit my students for several reasons: it will help engage them in the act of historical thinking, force them to problem solve and create a cohesive narrative, thus improving their communication skills, and expose them to 21st Century skills they will need to be successful in future endeavors (college, work).
