Encouraging Fitness and Stress Reduction Through Team Sports
My students need tennis racquets, balls, and badminton equipment in order develop team sport skills while getting fitness exercise and reducing stress.
My students are part of a community venturing from the comprehensive learning environment and experiencing an education attuned to their specific needs. As an independent study school, our diverse student body is a blend of unique individuals and instead of being lost in the classroom one-on-one educational relationships are developed between student, teacher and administrator.
Individuality is core to our ideology.
We are part of an academically competitive school district but while our neighboring comprehensive schools have abundant resources and parent involvement, as a smaller alternative school serving families from not only our district but neighboring communities, our financial needs require more outreach.
We have everyone: athletic superstars, academic luminaries, social butterflies, shy wallflowers, and wounded birds. Whatever reason our students are here for, they have one thing in common: comprehensive education did not meet their needs and they will do what they need to get the education they deserve.
My Project
Many students spend an entire day at our independent study public school doing homework, studying, attending small group classes and taking tests. Our school, unlike other schools in our District, does not have PE classes. Students earn PE credits toward graduation requirements through hours logged in independent PE activities.
In order to reduce stress, anxiety and depression, which has been increasing significantly among all students in recent years, teachers volunteer to coach and play tennis and badminton at noon with students on the courts adjacent to our school.
The hours spent in this activity count toward high school graduation requirements. The donated used tennis racquets and balls we have been using have worn out significantly over the past two years. In addition, we know from surveying students that if we add badminton to our court activities we will get more student participation.
Your donation of equipment to keep this volunteer project going will both contribute to the physical fitness of our students and enhance their academic performance by reducing student stress, anxiety and depression, which have become major obstacles to maximum achievement for many of our students. You will be helping us make a significant difference in many student's lives.
