Encouraging Empathy and Emotional Intelligence

My students need quality picture books, such as The Building Empathy Library that promote social-emotional development and a growth mindset. These instructional materials will support students' emotional intelligence and the habit of resilience.

My Students

We are a group of inquisitive students who enjoy working together in the classroom. We love gaining new knowledge using GLAD strategies in the classroom as we increase our academic vocabulary and improve our reading and writing skills. We also love practicing our organizational skills using AVID strategies in the classroom. This year, we’re also focusing on inquiry learning and levels of questioning!

Recognizing that every child’s social-emotional development is paramount to their success as a learner, quality literature that supports such development would uniquely benefit our students.

Read alouds offer an engaging learning experience for students to develop social-emotional skills as they make connections with the text. Students can also respond to the themes within the text through meaningful discussions and individual reflection. Quality picture books that promote a growth mindset will encourage personal skills and habits relating to resilience, confidence, and perseverance.

My Project

The Empathy Building Library and other reading materials that nurture the social-emotional development of students will positively impact learning in our classroom. Promoting positive interpersonal skills in the classroom maximizes the amount of time students spend engaged in academic learning activities. Encouraging emotional intelligence in our classroom using high quality picture books focused on social themes allows students to develop the social skills necessary to effectively participate in collaborative learning opportunities. Developing a mindset relating to resilience encourages students to be thoughtful risk-takers in the classroom as they expand their thinking and challenge themselves to meet their individual potential as life-long learners.
