Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are from South Los Angeles, particularly in the communities of Watts, Compton, and Willowbrook. We are part of a charter network that particularly serves students in underserved communities, and aims to provide students with the opportunities to access high-quality education which will set students on a path to a four-year university experience. My 8th graders are particularly passionate about social justice and healthcare in their communities, and are already preparing for university experiences that will help them to achieve careers in medicine, law, policy, and community organization.

This year, I have seen my students be creative, curious, and bold, pushing themselves toward collaboratively solving complicated problems using science.

Despite some of the challenges they may face outside of school, they come to school resilient and prepared to start the day fresh, where they can be surrounded by our close community of students and teachers. With the support of this school community, students feel supported to take risks and ask big questions, all in the pursuit of learning something new.

My Project

The materials that I am requesting for my classroom will do several things. Many of the supplies are typically used in art projects, which may seem to be the antithesis of science. However, we have found that our students are more engaged in learning, and retain knowledge better, when they can apply their science knowledge to something creative. Students are constantly doodling and creating on their own, so being able to translate that creative freedom to academics is beneficial, particularly for our middle schoolers. Art supplies will allow my students to create comic books on sustainability, erect 3-D models of the solar system, and engineer prototypes to prevent asteroid collisions.

One primary belief in our school is that a welcoming and positive physical space will help drive our students toward success in the classroom.

As a first year teacher, with my focus on providing a warm and encouraging presence for my students, as well as rigorous lessons that challenge their problem-solving abilities, my physical space has been neglected. My walls are devoid of interesting things for students to look at, and are mostly bare, besides a few pieces of student artwork that I have collected throughout the year. My students deserve a space that is interesting to be in, and focused on science, which I could easily do by adding some colorful and educational posters of the Solar System, Periodic Table, and space-themed posters that pay homage to our school's namesake.

In seeing the benefits that creativity, color, and warmth have on my students' ability to learn and thrive at school, I know that having these materials as a part of my classroom will continue to foster a curiosity and love of science that I already see in my students.
