My kindergarten class consists of 23 energetic students. Some of my students are ESL (English as a Second Language) learners, they come to me in the beginning of the year with little to no English. By the end of kindergarten, my students are expected to be reading at or above grade level which is a level 3/4 or C.
Out of the eight elementary schools in the district, we have the highest poverty rate.
About 78% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Our school services about 300 students from kindergarten to fifth grade.
My Project
With these leveled books, I can foster my students emerging literacy skills. These books will allow me to conduct guided reading groups with my students to strengthen their reading skills, fluency, and comprehension. Also they will provide my students with the opportunity to have real books placed in their hands that are at their own reading level.
Additionally, these leveled reader sets will allow me to provide differentiated instruction for my students.
Each set includes 5 books, allowing me meet the individual needs of every student. Ultimately, these books will provide my students the opportunity to expand their reading levels and their love for reading.
