Our school has a diverse community of students who are from all different economic statuses to different ethnic backgrounds. Of the approximately 1160 students reported in the 2017- 2018 students enrolled, the student body consists of approximately 34% White, 31% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, 23% Asian, 5% Hispanic, and 1% Black (6% Other).
My Project
Children are naturally motivated to learn, however, numerous factors have significant effects on learning and motivation. For example, "school climate, educators’ beliefs and perceptions, and family and social values have been demonstrated as important factors affecting student motivation" (Rowell & Hong, 2013). Counselors are trained to monitor academic progress, identify problems, and intervene with support as needed. The return to school has been trying for students across the nation, and I want to encourage my students to persevere through the rest of the school year.
Research shows that helping students develop attributional beliefs that lead to successful outcomes can increase academic motivation.
In an effort to do so, I would like to send postcards to my students with motivational messages, words of encouragement, and positive remarks regarding their progress in school. Additionally, the white board and post-it notes will be used to create a board for students to leave a positive message, or take one for themselves. Lastly, the rolling organizer will be used to house the post-its, writing supplies, snacks, and other relevant resources.
It's common knowledge that academically motivated students tend to perceive school and learning as valuable, and are consequently more engaged. With this project, I hope to help foster positive self-efficacy and autonomy in my students, and encourage them to "kūlia i ka nuʻu," or strive for the summit.
