This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a Computer Literacy teacher for grades K-8 in a low-income, urban district. One of the skills I teach is keyboarding. Students are using computers younger and younger today. Unfortunately, this means they build bad habits early on. For example, they create their own method of typing and once they've done it for too long, it's hard to get them to do it the proper way. In my computer class we have typing software to teach the students how to type properly. It is still difficult though. I have to remind them to do it correctly and it's not always their favorite thing to do. I'm planning to have a typing tournament in June. To make it as exciting and motivating as possible, I want to offer some great 1st place prizes. Therefore, I need 4 iPod Shuffles. I will be doing a tournament with 4 classes, so I would like to have that as a first prize for each class. Since I am in a low income district, many kids don't have iPods. By providing the 1st prizes for the tournament you will be giving them motivation to become better typists. As a result, 2nd and 3rd graders will work harder next year in anticipation of the tournament. If students learn how to type correctly now, this skill will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
