Encourage Healthy Eating Habits - FEED USA

My Students

According to a 2002 study, 28.5% of children entering kindergarten in Hawaii were obese. Doctors say that the figure has only gotten worse in recent years. Help us educate our elementary students in healthy eating habits.

I am a teacher librarian at an elementary school that services many Navy and Army families in Hawaii.

The library is the center of encouraging literacy on our Preschool-6th grade campus. About half of the students at my school are military dependents who move locations every three years. Health and wellness is a school-wide initiative that is supported by the school's teachers and a healthy snacks directive by the administration.

My Project

To further these plans, I would like to promote healthy eating through lessons in the library. Bookmarks outlining the food pyramid and daily dietary guidelines would be given to the children to promote healthy eating. Posters encouraging exercise, healthier drinks and foods would also be used to guide lessons. Finally, read aloud books and cookbooks would provide fun ways to teach the concepts of healthy eating with the younger students.

This project is needed to lay a foundation for the students on proper eating habits.

Once students understand the importance of a healthy diet, they can choose appropriate foods to eat and be responsible for menu choices at home and in restaurants.
