This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In The Lorax, Dr. Seuss wrote "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, it's not going to get better. It's not." Time For Kids will allow my students and I to gain the knowledge necessary to be caring and aware about environmental issues.
My first grade class is a group of inspiring students, most of whom come from economically disadvantaged and minority backgrounds.
In spite of the challenges they face both in and out of school, they come each day excited to learn. One of my goals is to foster a strong sense of citizenship in my students. This year, we will incorporate a news discussion into our daily morning meeting. The news theme for this year is the environment.
My Project
By providing each student with their own copy of Time For Kids, I will able to supplement our news discussions with authentic, age-appropriate articles. These magazines will enrich our classroom experience and develop our knowledge about the world around us. Frequent use of the magazines will serve as a way to build literacy skills across the curriculum.
Environmental issues are becoming more and more prevalent in the news.
By teaching my students how to interact with current events at an early age, they will be more prepared to engage in the local, state, and national community.
