Through the use of an enameling kiln, my students will be able to build layers of glass on their metal while experimenting with different colors, techniques and textures to develop their own unique style and creative expression. Through this experimentation, students will understand the basics of enameling techniques, including preparation of metal surfaces, applying enamels, and firing in the kiln.
Transitioning from torch firing to using an enameling kiln opens up a world of possibilities for them to explore and express themselves through colorful jewelry making.
I will be encouraging students to reflect on their learning journey throughout the project, identifying areas of growth, challenges overcome, and future goals in their enameling making practice. I look forward to seeing students achieve these goals to help cultivate their creativity, technical skills, and confidence as jewelry makers.
This kiln will provide any student who elects to take Jewelry making here with the opportunity to create unique, wearable masterpieces. I look forward to teaching my students Cloisonné and Plique-à-jour where they will use wire to solder in "cells" or spaces to fill layers of sifted enamel. The Plique-à-jour does not have a backing so therefore can be seen from both sides of the jewelry. These techniques can not be done without an enameling kiln. I am so excited to expose my students to more intensive exciting methods of enameling!
