My students are incredible! They are bright, hardworking 8th graders who are battling the effects of COVID on their schooling and world. They are a diverse bunch of learners who deserve all the support I can possibly give them.
Since this is my first year of teaching, my students are not only learning and growing, but they are also teaching me!
While they learn about figurative language and effective writing, I'm busy learning about the minds of 14- and 15-year-olds. At their age, they definitely have unique needs and challenges, but I'm constantly impressed by their strength and determination to overcome everything thrown in their way.
My Project
The data is in, and the "COVID slide" is real. Many of my students are reading several levels below their current grade level, and not a day goes by without a student telling me that they hate reading. I'm learning that when students say they hate reading, they really mean that they hate the books they've been reading. If they have a book that they are interested in, reading and literacy suddenly aren't chores--they're fun. However, since I am a first year teacher, the in-class book options students can choose from are quite thin. My goal is to fix that!

I've selected nearly 80 books that represent a variety of interests, genres, reading levels, and styles to better serve my students. As my students find books that grab their interest and push them to keep reading, their reading and literacy levels will soar. That's personalized, student-driven learning at its best!
There is nothing more magical than watching a reluctant reader lose themselves in a book for the first time. Thank you for making that a possibility for my 8th graders.
