Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Despite coming from what would be considered high-risk low-income households, they are excited about learning. Our students begin every day reciting our school pledge to be the best student they can be. They practice following school rules, are excited about contributions they make to their learning environment, and have decided to make good choices. Although I am their teacher, I love coming to work every day. The shine in their eyes to learn new things and the pride they display when they've mastered a new skill is priceless. My students remind me every day of my "why" for becoming an educator.

My Project

My students come from a high-risk, low-income area where books at home are not always available to them. They mostly only get an opportunity to read books at school. When they get home it would be life-changing for them to have a book to read so that they can continue to grow their knowledge and become confident readers.

The students we serve often move from home to home without permanent residence and books are not always affordable.

Their families often do not have access to a library, especially during the current state we are living in with so many Covid-19 restrictions. Studies have shown that scholars who have access to books at home and practice reading for 20 minutes or more have a greater chance of becoming college graduates. Studies have also shown that when children are offered books with characters that represent people who look like them in a positive light, they have higher positive self-esteem. Students will have books to read and use at home to complete reading and social studies projects and homework activities that meet grade-level standards. They will practice reading comprehension skills by asking and answering questions related to the book they read. This donation will help students meet the individual reading goals they have set to become stronger readers. In class, we will make connections to world events and the books they read by completing projects about social justice and diversity. With help from generous donors like you, our scholars will have the availability to read diverse books that empower them to become lifelong learners.
