Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Middle-school students are at a stage between the somewhat naive elementary years and the too-cool high school phase. This time is a turning point in their lives where they decide who they want to be. My students are a fascinating blend of curious, silly, and insightful.
As a school in a first-ring suburb, we are fortunate enough to have a blend of racial and socio-economic backgrounds in our school.
Our school is becoming increasingly diverse, with over 40% students of color and many hard-working scholars who commute to us from the Twin Cities. Almost 38% of students eat free or reduced price lunch and many come from unstable family and housing situations. I strive to make my classroom a safe and comfortable getaway for my wonderful learners.
My Project
A number of young women who attend my school are Muslim, and they often wear a headscarf or hijab. These women see covering their heads as an outward sign of faith.
A survey by ESPNW reported that 94% of women executives participated in sports; however, it's believed that Muslim girls participate in sports at half the rate of their peers.
For many Muslim women with few resources, they wear the same hijab in class as they do to participate in physical education classes and after school sports. This can sometimes be uncomfortable when their head coverings are not specifically designed to be worn for sports. They get hot and sweaty, and they sometimes come undone, causing these young women to not participate fully as they stop mid-stride to redo their headscarves.
We want all girls to have the opportunity to establish healthy lifestyles and to build a foundation for future success. Sports hijabs would help these young women stay comfortable while exercising or participating in sports. Sports hijabs are made to breathe and move with an athlete, allowing her to participate fully without fear of it falling off. And, a sports hijab is a safer option, as it doesn’t require pins to secure.
This project would allow our school to check out hijabs to our athletes for a sports season as we do jerseys. This will empower our young Muslim students to experience PE class more fully, and participate in sports to the best of their ability.
