My Project

How will the specific items you’re requesting make a difference in their learning?

The soldering kits will give my students hands-on experience with key electronics skills, which are essential for many jobs in STEM fields.

By working with these kits, they’ll learn how to put together, repair, and understand electronic circuits. Soldering teaches patience, problem-solving, and precise hand-eye coordination, all of which are important skills in technology and daily life. Using real-world tools in class will make a big difference, giving them practical skills they can apply in future jobs and showing them how STEM concepts can be used in real life.

What are your goals for this project?

My main goal is to give students technical skills that can lead to STEM careers, helping them see new possibilities for their future, both within and outside our community. I want to spark their interest in electronics and fabrication so they can become creators, not just consumers, of technology. I also hope to build their confidence in using challenging tools and develop their perseverance so they feel proud and capable when they face difficult tasks.

What makes your students special?

My students are Alaskan Native youth from a remote, rural community in Brevig Mission, Alaska. They bring unique perspectives and a strong sense of culture to their learning. Despite limited access to advanced resources, they are eager to learn and take on new challenges. Their cultural background gives them a deep respect for self-sufficiency and hands-on work, making them natural fits for learning practical skills like soldering.
