Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Ten of my 30 fifth grade students recently began independent writing projects, on top of their already existing school work. Every night, after they finished their homework, they took out their writer's notebook and begin crafting poems, plays, and essays based on their life experiences, hopes and dreams. The thought, care and dedication that went into those independent writing project amazes me so much that I wrote a proposal, "Empowering the Voices of 10 Girls From East Harlem" for the girls to self-publish a book with Xlibris, a partner of Random House Publishing. Thanks to the generosity of a donor like you, this proposal was funded in-full. The girls' book is due out in June 2007 and will be sold on Amazon.com, Borders.com, BarnesandNoble.com, and more than 200 online stores. The girls want to publicize their book since they feel the stories and advice should be heard by children nationwide. However, hiring a publicist is costly, so they're publicizing the book themselves. As a former public relations specialist, I'm teaching the girls how to write press releases and cover letters. They want to put together media kits so that their book signing, which our school for them, can be covered in the local papers and on NYC television stations. (NOTE: THE GIRLS AND I ARE NOT RECEIVING ANY COMPENSATION FOR THIS BOOK. ALL PROCEEDS FROM THE SALE OF THIS BOOK ARE GOING INTO A SCHOOL FUND TO BRING PUBLISHED AUTHORS TO OUR SCHOOL.) In order to make this dream a reality for these ten young writers, we need funds to create and send out media kits. That means we need everything from business card stock to folders. This book illustrates that young people have the ability to face the struggles of daily life regardless of where they come from or their actual age. Hence, if another child picks up their book, they are sure to find powerful insight and advice to deal to help them deal with nearly every difficult situation they face. Therefore, I hope you'll help my students with the funds they need to publicize their book so they can bring their writing out into the world.
