Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Ten of my 31 fifth grader students have recently undertaken independent writing projects, on top of their already existing school work. Every night, after they go finish their homework, they take out their writer notebooks and begin crafting poems, plays, personal narratives and essays based on their life experiences, hopes and dreams. The thought, care and dedication that goes into these independent writing projects amazes me since my girls have so much to say. They go through the writing process (i.e., collecting --> nurturing an idea --> drafting --> revising --> editing --> publishing) with each piece of writing they do. However, they need to be heard, beyond the walls of our fifth grade classroom. Therefore, I need you to help me bring their writing to the world at-large by publishing their writing in a real book through Xlibris.com. Xlibris, which is a partner of Random House Publishing, gives writers the ability to self-publish their books. Their basic service allows writers to publish a trade paperback book with an ISBN number and a barcode. The book is registered with Amazon.com, Borders.com, BarnesandNoble.com, Ingram, Books in Print, and more than 200 online stores. Further, their basic service will give my students the ability to have an author webpage, as well as a public book webpage, for which I will be the webmaster. Additionally, the girls will have the ability to layout their book, having the choice of cover and interior templates, as well as the ability to supply an image for the cover of the book and the author photo for the back cover. (I can see a picture of all 10 of them posing for the picture with radiant smiles and dressed in their most special outfits!) Imagine being published at the age of ten! That is a dream for most young authors. However, you can help me make that dream a reality for my ten ambitious and talented students. By allowing these girls to become published at the age of ten, you will give them the gift to launch a real publishing career. Who knows? The next Maya Angelou, J.K. Rowling, Jacqueline Woodson or Sandra Cisneros may be sitting in my classroom. With your help, the world will get to read her work and decide for themselves right now!
