This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Fifth grade students are becoming real readers who are developing preferences about the books they choose- learning about the different genres give them the power to distinguish between characteristics of literature they enjoy (ie. real-life situations, fantasy settings, reading about real people).

My students have big imaginations and lots of questions.

They have a sense of wonder and want to know more. Unfortunately, many of them do not have financial freedom to make educational visits to places of interest, or to be able to participate in virtual tours since they do not have Internet.

My Project

You may wonder- why am I requesting bookshelves and tubs? Well, the answer is books! Reading books takes you wherever you want to go. Reading is a skill that needs practice, and students are required to lots of it. I have a lot of books in my classroom (though always looking for more!), but want to organize them in a way that makes it easy for students to find what they are looking for. Our academic day is already filled- making the job of looking for a good fantasy book to read for a reading log that needs to be done for homework, as an example, would be priceless for a student who is trying to get to recess.

The bookshelves and plastic tubs will help me to organize my classroom library so students can quickly find an appropriate book to read.

And, I hope, students will find a great book that they love so that they will want to come back and find another one!
