My Students

If I were talking about you, you'd listen, right? We all would. It's human nature. If I'm the center of attention, I'm going to be engaged. Kids are the same way. Unfortunately, sometimes the curriculum isn't made relevant to kids, and they check out. A document camera would help me to change that.

I teach at an inner-city school in Arizona.

The school is in a low-income area, and my entire class of 28 kids qualifies for free lunch. They combat tough challenges - drugs, gangs, hunger - yet, my kids come to school each and every day willing to learn. Many times, however, they don't connect with the curriculum and don't find it relevant to their lives. I try to change that. I try to make them see how they use academic content every day, and how crucial it is to setting up a future with options. While I can't do anything to change the personal obstacles they face, I will do everything in my power to give them the education that helps them rise above it.

My Project

A document camera will promote a student-centered learning environment and boost engagement. When a student does an amazing piece of work, when he/she finally justifies a tough math problem, or writes an inspiring poem, I'll be able to share it with the class. I'll be able to use student work to drive instruction. Can you imagine the confidence that will build in the students? Not only will this engage the student currently being displayed, but the entire class. If you've worked with middle school students, you know their peers are so important to them. If one of their friends is the center of attention, they'll be listening too. Furthermore, the desire to have their own work showcased will push students to be engaged, to complete their work, and to do their personal best. The best part: the document camera is instantaneous. I don't have to waste instructional time having students duplicate their work on transparencies or posters. Engaged students and maximized time? Great combination!

Your donation will directly impact my students.

Providing our class with a document camera will boost engagement in the short term. In the long term, however, it will build confidence in my students. When the students believe in themselves, there is no limit to what they will accomplish. I can't wait to see how they change the world!
