I teach at an inner-city school in Arizona. The school is in a low-income area, and my entire class of 28 kids qualifies for free lunch. They combat tough challenges - drugs, gangs, hunger - yet, my kids come to school each and every day willing to learn. Many times, however, they don't connect with the curriculum and don't find it relevant to their lives. I try to change that. I try to make them see how they use academic content every day, and how crucial it is to setting up a future with options. While I can't do anything to change the personal obstacles they face, I will do everything in my power to give them the education that helps them rise above it.
