My Project
My students come from a variety of economical backgrounds as well as facing an array of health and developmental challenges. They approach the world with physical and intellectual obstacles; yet they enter the learning environment with an increasingly eagerness to learn. They often lack resources needed to meet their diverse needs. My classes consist of 9th - 12th grade students with multiple intellectual disabilities. I have students with high functioning autism, non-verbal and low functioning autism, developmentally delayed, and students with severe and profound cognitive deficits. The lack of technology makes it challenging to completely differentiate the curriculum and meet the individualized needs of my students.
No matter how diverse the students are they all have one thing in common, their love for technology!
I plan to use the class set of laptops to differentiate small group lessons that will compensate for an individual's specific learning deficits. The laptops will give students access to district technology platforms provided for students with learning disabilities. The laptops will provide innovative ways to enhance listening skills, reading, writing, math, social studies, science, and motor skills. Students with intellectual disabilities are visual learners and learn better when lessons are presented with visuals. The laptops will reach the sensory needs of students and strengthen motor skills for developmentally delayed students.
As a result, utilizing technology to individualize lessons will reduce the number of distractions and allow all students to have access to technological platforms and individualize lessons.
More than half of students from low‑income households
