Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a force to be reckoned with. They come from various backgrounds and cultures. Most of my students have experienced more trauma and hardships than most adults at such a young age. Despite the circumstances of their life they show up to school eager to learn. I love that in my classroom they are able to be the best versions of themselves.
They are multicultural and multilingual scientists, readers, writers, mathematicians, artists, and so much more.
My students are exceptional learners that come to school ready to learn in TWO languages, but in such need of more resources.
My Project
In first grade we work hard on developing our reading skills in English and Spanish. But it's not simply just about how we read and it is also about what reading creates in us. We need books that make us think deeper and ignite in us curiosity and the desire to learn more. As we explore our own identities and our family culture through our portrait project and other projects we need books that can help.
We need books that we see ourselves in, that empower us as we identify with the characters and settings, that are fun and challenging.
In first grade we learn a lot about ourselves, our families, our cultures, our neighborhood and these books will support and further develop that learning.
