In first grade we work hard on developing our reading skills in English and Spanish. But it's not simply just about how we read and it is also about what reading creates in us. We need books that make us think deeper and ignite in us curiosity and the desire to learn more. As we explore our own identities and our family culture through our portrait project and other projects we need books that can help. We need books that we see ourselves in, that empower us as we identify with the characters and settings, that are fun and challenging. In first grade we learn a lot about ourselves, our families, our cultures, our neighborhood and these books will support and further develop that learning.
