Mrs. SEXTON from Indianapolis IN is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need high interest low readability books to motivate them. With additional motivation, they'll improve their reading skills and learn to enjoy books.

I work in a low socioeconomic diverse school. We frequently struggle to have the resources available to reach the students with the greatest needs.
My students' greatest desire is to belong.
When the Harry Potter books were first released, my students carried those thick novels around with them. While I knew the reading level of those books were above their skill level, they wanted to have copies in their hands to fit in with their classmates.
My greatest desire is to have my students raise their ability levels so they could read a novel equal or greater to the Harry Potter series.
These high interest low readability books will reach my neediest fifth and sixth grade students. Our library contains numerous books for students with a reading level of third grade and higher, but there aren't enough titles for special needs students that remain at that first or second grade reading level for more than a year. They also don't want "baby books.” These students have delicate egos and need engaging books that at the casual glance appear at grade level. I selected books with my students in mind. I have also asked them which type of books they would enjoy reading. Students will be able to choose books that pique their curiosity, which will help them be more engaged and learn to love reading.
With these new high interest low readability books, my students will have a wide variety of books that will allow them to read independently an opportunity that hasn't been readily available to them.
The best way to improve reading ability is to read! These books will help my students grow in reading. This is an area where they have the greatest need to improve. This project will help them find the joy in reading.
