Establishing a welcoming classroom is extremely important. If a child feels safe and welcomed this will increase student learning. It will also be a place where students feel safe to take academic risks and express their feelings. social emotional skills and having a growth mindset are not only important in the classroom but it transfers to adulthood. If students are not taught these skills at an early age they can struggle at being well-rounded adults. On the contrary, adults who have these skills are more likely to be successful in their fields. Teaching social emotional skills and a growth mindset are just as important to teach as reading and math. I currently work in a large urban school district and I am switching classrooms this year to 2nd grade. While there are many positive things about working in an urban setting, it does seem to have more students needing social emotional skills to be taught to them. Due to having many behavioral problems and some students having a rough home life I think that makes it even more important to implement social emotional learning.
