This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students come from a variety of backgrounds; however, the majority of my students come from low socioeconomic status households and many students have experienced trauma. To assure students' needs are met in the school setting, and sometimes at home, teachers, social workers, and other school staff often use our own resources to secure the items necessary for meeting the needs of our students.

My students need a trusting and caring adult who will give them compassion, unconditional love, support, encouragement, and patience.

My Project

My students have experienced trauma, and as a result of their experiences, they have a difficult time self-regulating. Yoga has been found to reduce stress, change behavior, promote self-acceptance, and help form a sense of connectedness with others. These and other benefits are important to my students as they are not yet equipped with the skills necessary to calm their mind and body during times when they experience difficult emotions.

Yoga helps individuals to identify what is happening right now in their bodies and this form of mindfulness helps to improve reactivity. I would like to begin offering yoga as an optional recess activity for students. These yoga mats would provide my students with the tools necessary to make our yoga sessions fully functional and the most beneficial.
