My Project
My 9th grade students will be exploring the timeless concept of the hero’s journey—a narrative structure that reveals how challenges, growth, and transformation lead to profound insights for both the protagonist and the reader. To bring this concept to life, I am seeking multiple copies of high-interest young adult novels that feature compelling heroes on transformative journeys. While our school library offers a wonderful selection of novels, there are very limited copies of each title. This makes it difficult for small groups of students to read the same book simultaneously, which is essential for collaboration and meaningful discussion.
The goal of this project is to empower students to apply their learning in small groups by reading novels that feature compelling heroes on transformative journeys.
These books will allow students to explore how characters face adversity, grow through their experiences, and ultimately gain greater understanding—insights that resonate deeply with young readers navigating their own paths. By diving into these stories, students will not only analyze the hero’s journey but also reflect on how these narratives mirror their own lives and challenges. By working in small groups, students will support one another as they explore themes such as resilience, self-discovery, and courage. They will engage in rich conversations about the hero’s journey and its relevance to their lives, driving deeper exploration and critical thinking. These discussions will help students develop essential skills such as collaboration, communication, and analytical thinking—skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom.
