Help me give my students access to great books and discussions that engage them in critical thinking, challenge their biases, and strengthen their identities.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend an inner-city school in Minneapolis. We have a diverse student population, 43% are English Language Learners and 76% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch
Our 5th graders are an amazing group of students with an enthusiasm for learning, great books, and new experiences.
My Project
The AMAZEworks curriculum is a set of 20 picture books that deal with themes such as racism, cultural identity, homelessness, immigration, gender and sexuality, and social activism. Each book is the centerpiece of a classroom discussion and reflection. The book set is tailored for 5th grade with age appropriate material and themes.
This curriculum teaches students to have empathy and understanding for difference, develop healthy and complex identities, gain the skills to notice, name and reject biases, and to take action to make the world a better place.
The curriculum includes teacher training to learn how to facilitate these discussions around difficult topics.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
