Empowering Students Through Community Water Testing and Service

My Project

AMS serves a diverse urban community, with students and their families regularly using nearby Aptos Park. This student-led water testing project aims to assess water quality on campus and in surrounding areas, promoting environmental stewardship and community service. Students will test water from drinking fountains, taps, and runoff areas at the school and in Aptos Park, identifying contaminants such as bacteria, lead, and pH levels.

The project’s primary goal is to provide tangible benefits to both the school and park communities.

At school, students will ensure the safety of water sources, presenting findings to administrators to address any concerns, directly benefiting their peers. In the surrounding area, their water testing efforts will help protect the public by informing local authorities about water quality issues that could impact park users.

Resources requested include water testing kits, safety gear, data analysis software, and presentation materials. These tools will empower students to lead the initiative, apply scientific methods, and take direct action to improve their environment.

By engaging in this project, students gain leadership experience, critical thinking skills, and the satisfaction of serving others. The data they collect will contribute to the health and safety of both the AMS student body and the broader community, ensuring safe water for park visitors and promoting environmental awareness across the neighborhood.
