I teach kindergarten in a small rural public school serving 250 students. It is so much fun to teach kindergarten. My students are all excited to learn new things. We love reading under tables, working with our partners in little corners, and enjoy choosing the best learning nook each day. It is hard for anyone to sit in a standard seat all day long!
Kindergarten is the first exposure to full time school for lots of my students and making learning fun, engaging and comfortable is very important to me
My Project
The bean bag chair, the low table/chairs and the balance ball that I am requesting will be used for flexible seating in the classroom. With many of my students never being in a school environment before entering my class, sitting on the floor and in a standard chair for six hours a day is not easy. Many students wiggle and squirm throughout the day.
I believe that providing students with choices increases student interest, engagement, and learning.
One way that flex seating will help my students will be that they will get a choice of where they sit creating a sense of independence and responsibility to complete their work. Also, students will be more engaged in learning when they are comfortable! Finally, the flex seating will help students in my class that may have special needs.
Giving students choices helps build other important skills, such as self-regulation. My students cannot wait for the different seating options that will be available to them!
