Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember how distressing it can be when you do not know how to cope in new social situations? Each day our Pre-K 3 & 4 students face exciting and confusing situations where guidance is needed. These books will help our students build the necessary character traits to be successful in life.
At our Pre-K-4th grade school we serve 120 Pre-K3 and 120 Pre-K4 students in undeserved communities with 100% of our students are eligible for free and reduced lunch.
Due to recent cutbacks within the government we have also partnered up with Head Start to allow for our Pre-K4 students to attend school for the full day as opposed to half a day. These children have a natural curiosity and zest for learning. Every new subject just lights up their eyes as they quickly eat up every word we say.
My Project
At our school we are all a team and family. Each week every grade level has a Team and Family meeting where all classes in the grade level come together to read, talk and learn how to be a team and family. At our team and family we review various character traits to help our students be successful.
Leading psychologist have identified twenty-four character traits that tend to lead to meaningful, purposeful, and engaged lives. àDr. Peterson found seven of those to be the most predictive of a positive outcome in life. Those traits will be the ones we focus on with our students - zest, grit, self-control, optimism, gratitude, social intelligence, and love.
The issue is how to break those down for our young students. The most obvious way would be to model these traits to our students. These books will help our students be able to understand the traits, identify the modeled behaviors, and model them as well. I have requested the following titles:Join in and Play, Be Polite and Kind, Reach Out And Give and several other titles.
As an educator I cannot just focus on what my students need to be successful in my classroom but rather how to help them be successful in life.
As grade level chair my responsibility is also to reach out and help all students in my grade as well. Please help fund our project so that our Pre-K 3&4 students can develops the necessary traits to be successful to and through college.
