Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Art is so fun! My students love doing art! Unfortunately we are limited to the art supplies our school has. We don't have much more than tempera paint, crayons, and construction paper. My goal is empowering students through art. I am especially excited to use art to teach humanities.
My first grade students like to read, but they don't love it.
I want to get them really excited about reading. The best way to do this is by bringing one of their other loves into reading--art! I want my students to read books and then do an art project related to the story elements.
My 6 and 7 year old students attend a Title I school in San Jose, California. They are excited about school and love to do things that get them active and hands-on! I try to bring as many experiences to them as I can.
My Project
My students will use the people craft kit to create a character from stories that they read. After the students create a character they can use their little person to retell the story. Retelling can be very hard for first graders.
We also practice our reading skills during other subject areas like science. We chose fun books to practice our reading. We are going to be starting a unit on plants. With your donation we can combine reading, science, and now art! I am requesting collage pots, tissue paper, and Mod Podge. We will read all about plants and what they need. Then with the materials the students can decorate a pot using their magnificent art skills. Then we can plant plants and take care of them.
Empowering students through art is the goal of this project.
We will be able to use these art supplies to strengthen our reading skills as we practice retelling with the people we create. After practicing our reading skills as we learn to take care of plants, we will be able to decorate pots to plant flowers in.
Thank you so much for helping my class and empowering them through art!
