FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Walker's classroom raised $424

My Students
We can express feelings through art in a way that words cannot quite do. Most students in my school fall below the poverty level and many face obstacles every day, including financial difficulty, early pregnancy, and gang violence. Art is one of the things that keeps them engaged in school daily.
My students are creative and passionate about learning.
We teach using alternative teaching methods, meaning students are expected to do more than pass tests. They have to express their learning both in the real world as well as through art and music. This education model keeps our attendance high and helps to ensure that the colleges that students attend are highly selective. This project would be a great way of "empowering students through art"!
Students would benefit from this project in several ways. First, they would have a meditation like space in which to calm their thoughts prior to engaging in writing. In addition, we have restorative justice practice here at school. Students can engage in meditative coloring prior to participation in mediation discussions.
My Project
The goal for this project is to set up a mediation room where students will be able to work on creative writing. We need coloring books, markers, colored pencils, a cart, an indoor/outdoor chair, and a refrigerator.
The coloring books will be used to calm the minds of the students before engaging in writing. The tone of each writing piece should be reflected in the colors that are used. Since the images in each coloring book are abstract, students will have to be very descriptive with their words to help the reader fully understand what they were trying to express. We will use the chair in and out of the class when we work in the park or when a student prefers an alternate location to a desk. The refrigerator will be used to keep drinks or other refreshments cold. The cart will be used to move the materials to the multiple classrooms in which I teach.
Currently, we have one or two coloring books, which I make copies of.
This project would allow some students to have their own book. The colors would give students more options to express their creative side. They also could be loaned to the student since we are allowed to let students borrow materials from donors choose, but not ones that the school has purchased. Establishing this classroom environment would be a great addition to the students' current learning environment!
