Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"To give real service you must add something which cannot be bought or measured with money, and that is sincerity and integrity." Cougar theatre students are eager to put their art in service of their community through 7 different projects which need your support.

My students are the most amazing, humble, and optimistic bunch.

Despite limited resources, they manage to find ways to bring their visions to life. They are a tight knit team in which each artist's opinions are valued and collaboration incorporates student talent from multiple disciplines.Our school is large, with over 2,000 kids - all of whom receive free or reduced lunch. Economically, they are not the richest. Where they are rich is ingenuity, creativity, innovation, resourcefulness, high spirits, tenacity, and dedication. I have never met a group of students more dedicated to their craft and intent on growing as scholars, artists, activist and community leaders.

My Project

Students spent the last year studying the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This past fall, students produced a play which portrayed human rights defenders from all around the world. After which, students were inspired to take action themselves; they felt their work could not end with the closing of the show. Students vowed to take responsibility for their community and a stand against injustice around the world putting their art in service of others. Students broke into small teams and chose various topics addressed in the UDHR and created service projects including topics like homelessness among teens, racial discrimination, education for all, and equal access for students with autism. Materials are needed to bring their projects to life; binding materials for children's book addressing hate speech and a zine dedicated to women's issues; hygiene items to help care for homeless youth in neighborhood; autism awareness trinkets for school-wide events; and more.

The items provided will help students bring their service campaigns to life.

Our students gain a new appreciation for community service and humanitarian efforts; new leadership skills; a thirst to serve; art will become more than a beautiful medium but a means to change the world. In addition, these items will help impact human beings beyond our classroom for time to come, helping to spread awareness about issues in need of justice and dialogue, as well as local teens in need of immediate aid.
