Empowering Students Through Art: The Power of Music

My students need a variety of musical instruments, including rhythm sticks, drums, bells, and boomwhackers to make music class more interactive!

My Students

Music helps kids...Use their imagination...Move their bodies...Practice words and sounds...Work in a group...Learn to listen...Read...Express themselves...Experience Joy!!!

My students are a group of energetic, amazing kids with Autism.

They love to sing, dance and be silly. Most of all, they love hands on learning activities. I teach at a public school with a high poverty rate. All of my kids have great attendance and LOVE to learn.

My Project

All of my students love to get up and move! We incorporate movement activities throughout our school day. I am requesting an iPod to hook up to the speakers we have in the classroom to play music throughout the day. We want to start our day with a quick dance off to get our blood pumping and our brains ready for learning. Soft classical music has been proven to help stimulate brain activity and aide in concentration during learning activities. I am also requesting various musical instruments to enhance our music class. We have one set of Boomwhackers, that are extremely popular, but one set doesn't fully equip our class. We are excited to explore other ways to make music with rhythm sticks, drums, and bells!

Did you know...Most students with Autism respond positively to music?

I can tell you this is definitely true! I have children with severe to moderate Autism and music is one element that unites them all. There are many benefits of music. Music stimulates both hemispheres of the brain and stimulates cognitive processing. Music helps increase attention to tasks. Music reduces anxiety. Music elements, structure, and predictability provide a sense security and safety for kids that thrive on routine!
