Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When I open my classroom door, I see eager faces ready to learn. Their minds are extremely active soaking up every word and expression we exchange. My classroom is their world but my goal is to expose them to the multicultural world outside of the classroom. I can already visualize their excitement!

My school is a title I school that serves students that come from low-income families and qualify for the free and reduced lunch program.

I am a K-2 special education teacher with 12 students with intellectual disabilities who participate in the alternate curriculum. My class is the sole special education program at our school dedicated to students with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities. My students are extremely active and their attention span lasts no longer than ten to fifteen minutes per activity. My students have many needs from basic daily life-skills (e.g. diapering) to exposure to age appropriate standards based curriculum. It is my goal that my students experience world cultures through arts and crafts, music, dramatic play and literature. It is important for my students to be exposed to multicultural materials to empower them through the arts. Humanities is an important component in their academic exposure.

My Project

I will begin setting up my classroom with the circle time around the world class carpet to create an inviting environment. This carpet will be central to our classroom, supporting diversity and uniqueness. The carpet will also be important when we gather whole group to enjoy music from the Music From Around the World CD and explore dances. After capturing my students attention with movement and music I will then have them sit on the carpet to gain information from the variety of books available from the Holidays and Festivals Literature Library and Kit Book Around The World Set. Students will be emerged in literature informing them about different cultures food, clothing, music, homes, traditions, and values. I will use the multicultural play food assortment for students to have hands on dramatic play learning opportunities. Finally students will have an arts and crafts activity using People Shapes Project Kit to create a person and demonstrate their knowledge of a chosen culture.

With the donations for this project my students will learn about a multicultural world that exists outside of their classroom.

They will be exposed to different foods, clothing, music, books, values and traditions that they do not know exist. My students lives will change for the better because it will help them become well-rounded individuals. It is important for students of all abilities to be actively participating in our communities and this project will give them exposure to the WORLD!
