Empowering Students Through Art: Creating Baby Books
My students need supplies to create books (& puppets) for their children. They use books to learn how to write & illustrate their books & store materials in the cart
Our students have very busy lives filled with school, homework, jobs & family responsibilities of caring full time for an infant! When they come to school, they are eager to learn both academic work & parenting skills.
Early literacy is essential & students are eager to create personal baby books.
Located in a sunny neighborhood, our school serves students ranging from 14-18 years old and many are learning English as a second language.
Young women can start at our school while they are expecting & continue after their baby is born. In January 2014 we are created a library at the school, a space that includes books & electronic resources for academics as well as pleasure reading for teenagers. We have a collection of bilingual infant & toddler books so teen moms are able to read to the little ones. This year we started a maker space for bookmaking, puppetry & other crafts.
My Project
In our project, Empowering Students Through Art: Creating Baby Books, our young moms will design books for their infants & toddlers. They will research writing & illustrating children's books. They will examine & discuss board books & early concept books for children (ABC, numbers, colors, family routines). They will create a rubric for this project. Classmates will peer edit & critique. Books may be in English or bilingual with Spanish, Cantonese or Samoan. Students can also make a character puppet to go with their book. Finally, students will create clever illustrated books to share with infants & toddlers.

Children who are read to, sung to, & talked to from a young age develop bigger vocabularies, become better readers & are more likely to succeed in school.
When our young moms create personal story books, they will be excited to read & share with their children.
They will personalize the books with illustrations of their children, familiar settings & family routines. With basic bookmaking skills, they will create more books in the future, too!
