Empowering Students Through Art: Creating Graphic Books

My students need books about writing & drawing their own graphic stories. They will use comic strip layout paper & pencils for their work & store materials in the cart.

My Students

Our students will examine writing, art & production of favorite books in the library. They will research curriculum topics & use the writing process to complete fiction or non-fiction work.

Located a block from city hall our school serves school students grades 7 through 12.

The goal is to change behavior so students will stay in school and earn enough credits to graduate. Students from many areas of the city are provided with a middle and high school curriculum. Special Education students are identified as soon as they experience difficulty, allowing the focus to be on intervention rather than remediation.

My Project

Students will examine writing, art & production of favorite graphic books in the library. They will research curriculum topics & use the writing process to complete fiction or non-fiction work. Topics might include the Constitution, justice system, "how to books" about music, art, acting and environmental issues. Classmates will peer edit & critique. Students will create cleverly illustrated graphic books.

During library orientation, students identified graphic novels as #1 request.

Using this interest to encourage reading & writing will benefit these students. Developing new skills of creating graphic stories will increase student interest in reading in a variety of formats.
