Empowering Students Through Art: Cookbook Authors

My students need supplies to create original cookbooks. They will use cookbooks that focus on healthy recipes as models.

My Students

Yesterday the class that works in our school garden came to the library to study cookbooks. They are also visiting local restaurants & many want to find recipes using organic, healthy produce. They are excited about creating their own cookbooks to share with classmates & family!

Our school overlooks a panoramic view of the downtown city.

Students who have not been successful at traditional high schools find success and self motivation within rich academic settings. Students have the opportunity to select a project that matches their own interests and learning styles: language arts/literacy, mathematics, science, history/social science, world languages, and visual/performing arts. Service learning is an essential element at our school.

My Project

Students will research in the library using our cookbook collection. They will examine the layout, illustrations & themes. Research will include healthy cooking with organic produce. They will develop a rubric to use with the writing of their cookbooks. Classmates will peer edit & critique. Finally students will create clever illustrated cookbooks.

Many days each week students work in the garden: planting, weeding & harvesting.

For most this is their first gardening experience. When students research & write original cookbooks, they will learn more about electing & using healthy food. We will display the books in the library so all students can find a delicious recipe to try!!!
