Empowering Students Through Art: China and the Silk Road

My students need 5 CDs of traditional Chinese music, 3 flutes, 1 DVD, a costume, batik fabric, brushes, rice paper, art supplies and 51 books including Marco Polo.

My Students

Paul Rand once said that in the West, we look at art through life but in the Orient they look at life through art. I want to empower students through art to look and understand the history and culture of China.

Did Marco Polo reach China?

I want to empower students through art to find out and learn about China but my fourth graders don't have the funds for art supplies or resource books. My school is close to two military bases and a significant number of my students are dependents of deployed military personnel. Our small K-6 public school is over 40 years old and many of my wonderful students are deemed at-risk. Over 60% of them qualify for free and reduced priced breakfast and lunch, but we are not a Title I school. As a result, we lack the resources and opportunities for the art field trips of other schools in our area. My student population is racially and ethnically diverse. 10% of our students are in bilingual/ELL programs. Art can broaden their horizons and instill cultural pride. My students need art supplies and resources our school cannot afford.

My Project

I want to empower students through art to follow the Spice Road, learn about Marco Polo and about the history and contributions of China. The history of China is marked by thousands of years of world-changing innovations: from the compass and gunpowder to acupuncture and the printing press. I plan to expand and infuse art into our fourth grade study of China. I am asking for 51 books including Marco Polo, 1 DVD, 5 traditional music Cd's, batik fabric, brushes, rice paper, 1 costume and art supplies. We will examine the books, read the folktales, and look at traditional art forms. Students will examine and make batik fabric. They will learn to do simple Chinese characters on rice paper banners. They will write a folktale and illustrate it with Chinese cut work. I want my students to fully understand the wonderful things that can happen when they use art to develop a knowledge of history, culture, tradition and then share that knowledge during an Asian all-school open house.

Researching the Spice Road, Marco Polo, Chinese history; listening to traditional music; and then creating art can open a whole new world of understanding for my students.

Although my students live in a very multicultural world, they often have misunderstandings due to cultural differences and limited understanding of the history of China.
