My students need art supplies to paint an astronomy mural in our science classroom. These include, paint, primer, brushes, varnish, pallets, and respiration masks.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
J.R.R. Tolkien once wrote, "Not all those who wander are lost." A wall in my classroom was painted by my student, a talented graffiti artist. The wall has the word "THINK" sprawled across, with the Tolkien quote tucked in the corner. This wall is an ode to our students opportunity to think freely.
As a second year 8th Grade Science teacher, I have already experienced the lack of funding our science program receives.
With such limited funds, it is nearly impossible to obtain the necessary supplies to create an interactive and engaging learning environment. The activities that we complete, both in and out of the classroom, are greatly restricted by the socioeconomic makeup of our student body, as well as the absence of a budget for laboratory supplies. The students in our school come from very diverse backgrounds and cultures. The students themselves are very willing to work in school and take the opportunity to utilize the limited resources that are available.
My Project
Two of my female students are showing an increasing passion toward the arts. In an effort to empower my students, I have asked them to paint a mural on the wall somehow associated with Astronomy. Since I want their creativity to shine through, the Astronomy connection is the only parameter I have set, and the students will have free reign over the rest of the artistic process. A collection of students will help in the process by sanding the walls, priming, and finally adding a varnish to the finished mural. They will use the acrylic paint to do the mural and will be using respiratory air filters for safety.
This project will make a difference by breathing new life into the classroom.
When a student spray-painted my wall last year, it changed the dynamic of the classroom and made it feel more like a place that students want to learn. After seeing how one wall could change the classroom, I have decided to empower my students through art. Each year, for the next 3 years, I will ask my students, who are interested, to collaborate and paint each of the 3 remaining walls relating to each of our 4 units.
