Empowering Student Voices to Build a Stronger Community Through Literature

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our project aims to empower students to become leaders and advocates in our school and greater community through literature. By reading and discussing powerful books like A Work in Progress, Other Words for Home, Hate That Cat, Red, White, and Whole, Starfish, Love That Dog, and Inside Out and Back Again, my students will explore themes of identity, empathy, resilience, and advocacy.

However, this project goes beyond personal growth or classroom discussion.

After reading these texts, students will lead a school-wide literacy initiative. They will organize and host a "Voices of Our Community" Reading Series — a series of events where students share what they have learned about acceptance, resilience, and community building. Students will invite their peers, families, and local community members to hear student-led book talks, dramatic readings, and creative presentations inspired by these novels.

Additionally, students will create community outreach materials, such as posters, bookmarks, and short videos, highlighting themes from the books that relate to real challenges in our community (such as immigration, bullying, and body positivity). These materials will be distributed throughout our school, local library, and community centers to spread messages of hope, acceptance, and resilience to a broader audience.

This initiative serves our school community and surrounding neighborhood by using student voices to spark important conversations about inclusion, kindness, and perseverance. Students are not only building their own skills but are taking leadership roles to uplift and inspire others in our city.

We hope that through this project, students will understand the power of their voices to make a difference — today and in the future.
