Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I love how engaged and eager my students are when they have access to hands-on learning materials. Many of them are English learners who benefit from visual aids, interactive worksheets, and graphic organizers to support their understanding of complex physics concepts. However, beyond our classroom, we recognize that many younger students and community members struggle with literacy skills, particularly in understanding academic texts.

To address this need, my students will take the lead in organizing a literacy outreach program that supports younger students and English learners in our school and local community.

With the requested classroom printer, my students will design and print science-themed literacy materials such as flashcards, bilingual reading comprehension activities, and interactive booklets to help other students strengthen their reading fluency, vocabulary, and confidence in academic literacy.

How Students Will Lead This Literacy Initiative

• Mentorship & Tutoring: My students will host peer-led reading sessions, helping younger students and newcomers develop literacy skills using engaging science texts.

• Creating Literacy Resources: They will design and print customized vocabulary-building flashcards, translated science articles, and comprehension worksheets to support literacy development in our school.

• Library Literacy Support: As a science tutor every Friday in the school library, I will ensure that these materials reach a broader group of students who need extra literacy support. Students attending tutoring will have access to these printed resources to help them strengthen their reading comprehension and confidence in understanding academic texts.

• Community Impact: Students will organize a “Science & Literacy Day” where they will share their materials with younger students, guiding them through interactive reading activities that make learning both fun and meaningful.

This project will give students the tools to create and share printed resources, benefiting the entire school community.
