Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with a group of incredibly talented and unique junior high students at a highly impacted Title 1 school. I am a special education teacher in a behavioral classroom. This means that I focus on teaching social skills including self-regulation strategies, relationship building, executive functioning, and growth mindset, to about fifteen 7th - 9th grade students with disabilities.

My classroom is trauma informed, which means that I have been trained, and continue to train myself, on understanding how trauma affects the brain and how to meet the social emotional needs of my students.

My goal is to build a safe and welcoming classroom community for my students to learn. They come from diverse backgrounds and have had difficult pasts. They are learning how to be successful in a world that hasn't always been kind to them.

My Project

Last year I started using the Choices magazine from Scholastic to help increase engagement in my social skills classes. The articles are written specifically for teens and preteens, with topics they care about. My students loved them!

Help me renew my subscription to the Choices magazine so I can continue to teach interactive lessons in the areas of social-emotional learning, life skills, mental health, personal health, and digital citizenship.

The articles are relevant to today's teens and their struggles. The teacher resources include videos and digital friendly activities that my students find interesting. They are motivated to participate in discussions and the magazine fosters must-have skills such as resiliency, stress management, and empathy. Plus the students get to take them home!
