My Students

My students are so very special. I have a number of high-needs students, including kids who have been kicked out of other schools, some who don't have stable families, some who barely speak English, and some with really hard backgrounds. Despite their struggles, every day they come to school ready to work and ready to learn.

Ninety percent of my students come from families whose income is below the poverty line.

Many struggle with hunger, clothing issues, finding basic school supplies (which we often provide), taking care of siblings or in some sad cases taking care of their parents. Most are years below grade level. Every one of them comes to school looking for a safe place, which we provide for them. They come looking for love and affirmation, which we give them. And although they don't all know it, every one of them comes looking for learning, trying to figure out what they are capable of accomplishing.

My Project

Hi there! I teach at a high-needs school in Charlotte, NC, where my students struggle to catch up to their peers in higher income areas. I have always loved reading, and sought to inspire a love of reading in my students. Many of my kids think they don't like reading because it has been a massive struggle for them to learn to read. Some of my students come from homes that have very few books. Some of my students love reading, but don't have access to good novels.

One of my goals is to bring my children into contact with as many high-quality novels as possible this year.

I have sought out small group sets of novels so that my kids can read high interest books and discover their new favorite story. We read Love That Dog earlier this year, and the kids were so enthralled that I want to give them each a copy to keep forever. The power of a good novel is never to be underestimated. I have seen books change children's lives, and have used some novels to broaden children's minds greatly. I believe great reading leads to great thinking, and great thinkers can change the world. Will you join me on my crusade to empower children to be known as great readers and good citizens by helping to fund a class set of Love That Dog (and several other favorite titles for small groups) for my students? I want my kids to have every opportunity that other kids have, and if you can help me empower my children, please know your money will not go to waste, but will make a huge, huge difference! Thank you for your time!
